A Closer Look at the Parker 92R Safety Razor

I’ve had the Parker 92R DE Razor in the wet shaving arsenal for a little while.  According an article on Sharpologist titled: The Evolution Of Parker Razors the 92R was introduced in 2011 (it’s also appears to be one of Mantic’s favorites)

As I’ve mentioned in a number of previous posts, Crystal Razor Blades have become my go to blade.  They’re the ones I reach for when I use my 92R (and pretty much any safety razor for that matter).  I’ve tried a bunch of other blades: Feather Razor Blades, Shark Super Chrome, Derby Extra Super Stainless Blades, Merkur DE Blades, and Dreadnought Razor Blades but I’m partial to the Crystal blades.

The Parker 92R is a Twist-To-Open (or TTO)  with a black and chrome finish with a textured handle.  It measures about 4.25 inches from end to end and the handle measuring roughly 3.75 inches.  The 92R weighs 3.0 oz according to our scale.

To compare it to another popular Parker razor,  Parker 26C Open Comb measures 4 1/8 inches  from end to end with a handle that measures about 3.75 inches from the tip to the base of the razor head and this razor weighs in at 3.3 oz (on our scale)

A Closer Look at the Edwin Jagger DE3D14 3D Laser Diamond DE Razor

The Edwin Jagger DE3D14 3D Laser Diamond DE Razor was released in 2014.It is a three piece, closed comb, razor and features a 3D patterned handle with knurling effect for both an improved grip.  The Handle measures about 3.5 inches from the bottom of the handle to the base of the razor head.  It measures roughly 3.75 inches from end to end and weighs 2.4 oz according to our scale.

To compare it to another popular razor, the Merkur 34C HD measures 3.25 inches  from end to end with a handle that measures about 3 inches from the base of the handle to the base of the razor head. The 34C razor weighs 2.8 oz according to our scale.

I've had the Edwin Jagger 3D Laser Diamond DE Razor in the wet shaving routine for a little while. Personally, I like the handle and find the texture helps to maintain a grip with wet and even slightly soapy hands.  If my hands were too soapy though, I found it didn’t help much. Crystal Razor Blades (a.k.a Israeli Personnas) have been the go to blade and have typically used it in this razor. Admittedly, the only other blade I’ve  tried in the razor has been the Shark Super Chrome Super Stainless Blades.  I didn’t have any problems with it, but the Crystals are still my favorite. I'll probably give it a spin with a Feather DE Razor Blade some time in the near future.

Trying HeadSlick With a Brush

The one thing I like about wet shaving is trying a lot of things.   Betelgeux of Reddit’s Wicked_Edge seems to take it to another level.  Check out his Youtube channel and you’ll see what I mean Betelgeux tried shaving using hair conditioner, KY Jelly, and even peanut butter (chunky style).

Personally, my ideas aren’t that creative. One day I was in the shower and I applied my HeadSlick Mentholated Shave Cream to my scalp with my fingers like I had always done.  As I stood there finger lathering this shave cream, I wondered if HeadSlick would lather a brush.  Looking at the bottle, the directions simply stated: “Wet head and face with warm water. Apply a thin layer of HeadSlick to shaving area. Shave, Rinse well.”  It made no mention of a brush.  So, why not give it a try.

Sometime ago, we did a blog post and even a Youtube video for Game Day Men’s Sandalwood Shave cream.  This product was also designed to be brushless but discovered that it performed well for us when using a brush.  We wondered if HeadSlick would be the same way.

We used a Col Conk Badger Brush to lather the HeadBlade Mentholated Shave Cream.  Other tools  of choice for this session was an iKon ShaveCraft 101 with a Crystal (sometimes referred to as Israeli Personnas) DE razor Blade for the shave on both head and face; the HeadBlade ATX for a cleanup pass on the scalp, and finishing it off with Fine Accoutrements Platinum.

HeadSlick proved to lather well with a brush. For me, a pea sized amount was good for about two passes on the head.  I was able to build a pretty good lather with a badger brush. Ran the brush under the tap rinsing it hot water for about 10 seconds, shook out the excess, and applied a small pea sized amount of HeadSlick to the brush.  Swirled the brush on the scalp and was pleasantly surprised it was developing a lather that had that merengue like consistency.   I felt the slickness was still the same.

I did need to reload the brush after the head shave portion of the routine was complete.  Tried lathering the face with what remained on the brush.  While, I did get somewhat of a light foamy lather on my face, it felt as if the lubricating properties of the cream were gone. So I added another pea sized amount to the brush and lathered up the face. I felt the difference and this proved to be an amount good for two passes (and potentially a third)

I like the cooling sensation of the menthol.   Personally, I find HeadSlick to be a tad stronger than Proraso Green Shave Cream.  With HeadSlick, or other menthol shave creams, I find that I don’t typically have to apply an aftershave balm or splash to my head after shaving.  Though, I typically do anyway. In this session I finished off with Fine Platinum – which I think complemented the cooling menthol feeling and even scent of the HeadSlick.

Personally, I like the slickness and menthol feeling from HeadBlade’s HeadSlick Shave Cream.  When using a shave brush to apply it, I feel that am better able to portion out the cream.  When slapping it on with the fingers I feel I have a tendency of using more.

A Closer Look at the Merkur 38C Razor

The Merkur 38C Heavy Duty (HD for short) is a two piece safety razor with polished chrome finish and barber pole style etching on the handle.  The handle measures about 3.75 inches from the bottom of the handle to the base of the razor head. It measures 4 inches from end to end and weighs 4 oz (on our scale).

To compare it to another popular Merkur razor, the Merkur 34C HD measures 3.25 inches  from end to end with a handle that measures about 3 inches from the tip to the base of the razor head and this razor weighs in at 2.8 oz (on our scale). It shares the same razor head design as the 38C.

I've had the Merkur 38C in the wet shaving arsenal for a little while. Even posted some Shave of the Day or SOTD pics with this Razor (as well as an assortment of other shaving related pictures) on Instagram.


Personally, I've gotten accustomed to the Crystal RazorBlades (a.k.a Israeli Personnas) and find those to be work well with the 38C razor. I've tried a few others like Shark Super Chrome, Derby Extra Super Stainless Blades, and Merkur DE Blades, but I’m partial to the Crystal blades.

Popeye Shave Collection - A Closer Look

One day, Scott Saltzman, current proprietor of Razor MD, was helping out in the basement of his grandfather’s pharmacy and stumbled upon a handwritten notebook that dated back to the early 1930’s containing recipes for shaving products.

Intrigued with the backstory of the found recipes of his grandfather and great grandfather, Scott and his father began work on recreating the pre-shave oil, shave cream, and post shave lotion … and the Razor MD Rx Shave collection, an all-natural, American made line of hand-crafted shave products, was reborn.

Their Popeye Shave Collection was released March 2013.   Included in this special edition collection is a tin with vintage styled Popeye artwork that contains  a 2oz preshave oil, 8 oz shave cream,  and 4 oz post shave lotion in what they’re calling “sailorwood” (sandalwood) scent.  Overall I find the Razor MD sailorwood/sandalwood scent to be very nice, light and not overpowering.

We’ve tried out the Popeye shaving products and wanted to take a closer look at the items that make up the set:

The Pre-Shave Oil

There seems to be some debate on the benefit of preshave oil. Some argue that it clogs the pores. Others say it a pre-shave oil lubricates and protects the skin before a shave.  

I can see both sides. There have been products that others swear by that just don’t work for my skin.  For me, I haven’t noticed my skin breaking out because of a pre-shave oil so I tend to use one off and on; especially in the winter when the heat turned up and dries out my skin.

The Razor MD Bottle is relatively small.   Personally, I think it’s a good travel size.  A small, pea-sized, amount seemed to work for my face. I used a little more for my head (about double what I use for the face)


The Shave Cream

This is a brushless shave cream and is applied with the fingers. Not the product of choice for those who prefer lathering with a shave brush.  We’ve tried on a number of occasions, but it doesn’t work with a brush.

The Popeye Shave Cream is probably better suited for those who want to transition over from an aerosol shave cream or for those who shave in the shower.  

There was a post on the Sharpologist blog where they pointed out that the chemical mixture used to dispense the cream from the can tend to dry out the skin.  So, if preferring to steer clear of some of those chemicals and wanting to move to a brushless shave cream, consider the Razor MD shave cream as an option.

Personally, I thought it had a decent slickness to it. It reminded me of some other brushless creams I’ve tried, like the Every Man Jack Shave Cream, Joe Grooming Shave, Burts Bees Shave Cream, or even Billy Jealousy Whipped Cream.  

I don’t have a thick beard, so application wise I needed about an almond sized dollop to cover the face.  I needed a little more to cover my head.

The Post Shave Lotion

Two of the ingredients listed on the Post Shave are Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice and Lavandula Officinalis (Lavender Oil).  I first discovered the benefits of those ingredients watching a behind the scenes clip from the movie The 40-Year Old Virgin where after filming the infamous waxing scene, they used a lavender and aloe mixture to soothe the skin.  They mention it round the 3:00 minute mark in the clip below. Note: Clip below is NSFW - Strong Language Used



Granted, The 40-Year Old Virgin probably isn’t the greatest source of information for treating irritated skin. But it did prompt me to consider the benefits of Aloe and Lavender for razor burn and irritated skin.  According to the the article titled Lavender Oil for Burns from the Livestrong website, Lavender is said to “… have local analgesic and anesthetic effects.” Also from the Livestrong site, the article titled Aloe Vera & Skin Benefits, Aloe vera is said to have “anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties”
Dispensing Post Shave Lotion

I’ve been using the Razor MD Natural Unscented Post Shave Lotion for a while.  While the scent is different, the feel and consistency of the Popeye Post Shave Lotion is similar.  It has what I would probably describe as a “calming feel” and does not have that “sting” of a balm or splash. I typically use this post shave lotion after applying a splash or if my skin has been irritated.  I’ve even used it on my nose when have a cold and my skin has been irritated from the tissues.

During this particular shave session, I decided to use the Fine Accoutrements Platinum after shave splash.  After a about 10 or 15 minutes, I then applied the Popeye Post Shave Lotion. I felt that light sandalwood scent of the Post Shave Lotion complemented the Fine Platinum scent that lingered.

If you’re thinking of switching the canned aerosol shave cream for a sandalwood scented shave set, consider the Popeye Shave Collection by Razor MD.  If sandalwood isn’t the preferred scent choice, then check out the Pre-Shave Oils, Shave Creams, and Post Shave Lotions by Razor MD in their Natural Unscented and Herbal Blend aromas.

Game Day Men's Shaving Cream Video

A few weeks ago, we wrote about our experience with the Game Day Men's Shave Cream in a post titled Game Day Men's Sandalwood Shave Cream - A Closer Look  


We were really pleased with it and enjoyed using this shave cream with a shave brush, despite it be being designed as brushless shave cream. To expand on that post a bit, we recorded a video seeing how it performed when bowl lathering.
