A Closer Look at The Edwin Jagger DE86RC14bl Safety Razor

April 06, 2021 0

The Edwin Jagger DE86RC14bl double edge razor debuted back in 2014 and have had it in the routine since then.  It is a three piece, closed comb/safety bar razor and features a rubber coated handle for an improved grip.  The handle measures roughly 3.375 inches. The whole razor measures about 3.75 inches from end to end and weighs 2.7 oz according to our scale.

The DE86RC14bl (right) measured the same as the DE89.

To compare it to another popular razor in the Edwin Jagger family, the DE89 measured and weighed same as the DE86RC14bl.  As a side note, in a previous post we measured a weight of 2.6 oz for the DE89.  I measured it with the same scale but in a different room and would attribute the small weight difference to that.  I have the DE89 and the Dreadnought Spartan Razor and use them from time to time.  Because of the similar dimensions, weight, and aggressiveness of shave to the DE89 and the Spartan, the DE86RC14bl feels very familiar in the hands.

Like the other Edwin Jagger razors I’ve tried, the DE86RC14bl is what many would describe as a mild shave.  As a result, it is often touted as a good razor for the beginner.   Personally, I also like Edwin Jagger razors for when I try out a new blade.  The mild shave allows me to ease into the aggressiveness of a blade by trying a few shaves with a mild razor and gradually try the blade with aggressive razors.  I do like the black rubber coated handle and find that it helps my grip a bit with wet or even soapy hands.  Still, I try to remain in the practice of rinsing the soap off my hands because the last thing I want to do risk having it slip and cutting my face or head.

Overall, I find that the Edwin Jagger DE86RC14bl is just a nice razor to have in the collection.

A Closer Look at the Edwin Jagger Pearl Effect Handled Razors

May 06, 2018 0
I usually have a YouTube video that accompanies these types of posts.   They are a bit time consuming to create.  So, because of the whole changes in the YouTube monetization rules I figured I’d take a little break from creating them since they don’t garnish a lot of likes.  But, if you’ve enjoyed them or if you see them as helpful let me know.  That would be good motivation to keep going.

Anyway, back to wet shaving stuff.

Edwin Jagger Razors with Pearl Effect Handles

Edwin Jagger’s line of razors with the Pearl Effect Handles were first introduced back in 2014 and were designed with women wet shavers in mind.   Compared to the popular Edwin Jagger DE89 the handles are bit longer; which is meant to get to the harder to reach areas.  The Pearl Effect razors measure approximately 4 inches in length whereas the DE89 measures about 3.75 inches. Weight-wise they are comparable; with each one weighing in at 2.6 ounces.

The Edwin Jagger DELBE14bl was roughly the length of the Merkur 38C but weighed as much as the Edwin Jagger DE89

Lengthwise it is closer to another razor that I have in the arsenal: the Merkur 38C.  However, at 4 ounces, the 38C outweighs the Edwin Jagger Pearl Effect handled razors.  The handle of the Merkur 38C is bulkier and the extra 1.4 ounces gives it some heft.

These Edwin Jagger razors are available in four different colors: Rose (DELRO14bl), Blue (DELBE14bl), Lilac (DELLI14bl), and Pink (DELPI14bl).   From what I’ve read the handles are constructed of acrylic.  But, to me, it has the appearance and texture of porcelain.  Compared to the other acrylic handled razors, I think the Pearl Effect razors look quite elegant.

Apart from the cartridge razors, Edwin Jagger appears to use the same razor head for the safety razors.  So, I find that a DELLI14bl shaves the same as DE89.  So, even though they were designed with women in mind, I see no reason why men cannot use it especially if they want to add a little more color to the razor collection.

To compare it to another popular razor, the Merkur 34C HD measures 3.25 inches  from end to end with a handle that measures about 3 inches from the base of the handle to the base of the razor head. The 34C razor weighs 2.8 oz according to our scale.

We took a look at this razor in a short video.

I've had the Edwin Jagger 3D Laser Diamond DE Razor in the wet shaving routine for a little while. Personally, I like the handle and find the texture helps to maintain a grip with wet and even slightly soapy hands.  If my hands were too soapy though, I found it didn’t help much. Crystal Razor Blades (a.k.a Israeli Personnas) have been the go to blade and have typically used it in this razor. Admittedly, the only other blade I’ve  tried in the razor has been the Shark Super Chrome Super Stainless Blades.  I didn’t have any problems with it, but the Crystals are still my favorite. I'll probably give it a spin with a Feather DE Razor Blade some time in the near future.
